Candle Terminology


Taper: Six to 18 inches. Ideal for table setting. Elegant, formal or informal, depending on holders/arrangement, color, etc.

Carriage: Shorter, thicker taper that burns longer than the average taper.

Votive: Originally produced as white unscented [candles] for religious ceremonies, now available in many colors and fragrances. Votives are burned in holders that make for festive home use, both indoors and out. Group several together for a romantic setting in almost any room of the house.

Pillar or Column: Thick in diameter. Adds decorative touch throughout the house. Now comes in mini-pillars that stand on their own.

Luminaria: Outdoor candles made by planting 15-hour votive in a paper bags filled with sand.

Fragrance: Scented candles release fragrance while burning. Wide variety of fragrances available, from fruits and florals to fine perfumes.

Container Candle: Decorative and highly scented candles poured into various glass, tin and pottery pieces. Perfect for use in home to add fragrance or mask unwanted odors.
